Information SEcurity > Introduction to Security > What is information Security?

Information Security (InfoSec) refers to safeguarding important information from unauthorized access, disclosure, use, alteration, or disruption. Its goal is to ensure that sensitive organizational data is accessible only to authorized users, remains confidential, and preserves its integrity.

Protecting information assets—such as financial, confidential, personal, or sensitive data—is essential. These assets may exist as digital files, paper documents, physical media, or even spoken information.

Throughout the data lifecycle, InfoSec encompasses activities like infrastructure management, software protection, testing, auditing, and archiving.

Today, organizations use a mix of on-premise systems and cloud platforms, known as hybrid and multi-cloud environments. This makes security more complex. At the same time, cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated and frequent.

To deal with this, different teams—such as IT, security, and management—must collaborate. They need to regularly update security tools, policies, and procedures to effectively defend against new and evolving threats.
